(or… The Don’t Upgrade Your ISIS Yet Again Storage Solution)
In medium to large editorial environment, editing systems (Avid, Final Cut, Adobe Premiere, etc.) need significant amounts of expensive high performance shared storage (e.g. ISIS). Requirements of editorial and related post production tools for storage seem to always be growing. One effective way to control storage cost growth is to keep only current projects on the costly tier 1 storage. An Editorial Storage Offload solution links a hybrid NAS/LTO/LTFS storage solution (combining traditional tier 2 and tier 3 storage) with the tier 1 storage providing automatic and seamless movement of content to and from a tape library. For some systems, this solution can analyze orphaned content and move it out of shared storage. Such orphaned content has been known to waste terrabytes of valuable space in a high-performance shared storage system.
